Why some merges are instant and others are not
If every clip uses the same codec, resolution and frame rate, merging is just a matter of writing the existing video data into one container end to end. Nothing is decoded or re-compressed, so a merge of several large files can finish in seconds with zero quality loss. Mixing formats forces a re-encode, which takes real time and costs a generation of quality.

Getting a clean join
Order matters and cannot be fixed afterwards without splitting the file again, so arrange your clips before merging. If your sources differ, normalising them first with the video resizer, so they share a resolution and aspect ratio, produces a noticeably cleaner result than letting the merge sort it out.
